Hi I’m Yaz,
wife, Mama, nurse, home cook, and dog lover
When I wasn’t working at the hospital as a nurse taking care of my mamas and babies, you'd most likely find me in my kitchen or enjoying the great outdoors with my handsome husband and our beloved dogs. Now on maternity leave, you’re likely to still find me doing those things, but now with my beautiful little daughter, Yara, in tow.
My love for cooking began in my early years when I spent the first eight years of my life in Brazil, where pretending to cook outside with dirt and leaves was my favorite pastime. Back then, I proudly proclaimed that I would grow up to be a chef.
As I continued to grow, I realized that my passion for cooking was intricately linked to the joy of sharing meals with friends and family. Pursuing a career as a restaurant chef, I believe would have distanced me from that cherished connection with people. With the desire to find something that ensured I’d have a lot of the human element in my work, I decided to pursue a degree in Psychology. It seemed like the right choice at the time, although it wasn't my ultimate goal.
Over the years, I embarked on various career paths, each contributing pieces to the puzzle of my life's purpose. It wasn't until later that I connected the dots and recognized my deep interest in women's health and my innate ability to connect with people. This realization led me to pursue a degree in Nursing, eventually landing me a job as a perinatal nurse in a hospital the vibrant city of Toronto.
My experience working with women in the perinatal period made me realize something: many women go through significant phases of life—such as birth, postpartum, or even miscarriage—with uncertainty and often alone. Despite their best efforts to prepare, the “not-so-glamorous” aspects are rarely discussed. Many women aren’t fully aware of all their birthing options and often only know what is mainstream, even though it may not be the best choice for everyone.
This realization inspired me to create The Birth Unboxed podcast, where women share personal stories about their unique experiences navigating birth, both within and outside the medical system. My goal is to provide more resources and awareness, empowering women to make informed choices and feel prepared for whatever their birth journey brings.
Ultimately, this space is designed to support women by sharing knowledge, wisdom, and resources. More importantly, it’s a platform to foster connections among women, building communities of mutual support and empowerment.
